We took our 9-week-old lab puppy in for his initial visit and vaccinations. We voiced our concern to Dr. Blackwood that he didn’t eat his breakfast and his fluid intake decreased, she said it wasn’t unusual and didn’t seem concerned. Two vaccinations were administered along with a deworming and we were advised of warning signs of an allergic reaction and to notify them of any. A couple of hours later he had an episode of vomiting so we notified them, and they asked us to bring him back in for a re-examination. The deworming medication was administered by mouth so they suggested we readminister the medication at home in a couple of days. Somehow there was a lapse in communication and one of the vet techs administered the deworming medication while in the office and did not make us aware of the error. We took him back home where shortly after he started having diarrhea – we notified them again and Dr. Blackwood voiced her concern for a potential case of parvo. When asked why they didn’t test for parvo when in the office the second time she said it was costly at $95 but instead referred us to the emergency vet costing us around $400. The emergency vet diagnosed him with an allergic reaction which he was treated for at the second vet visit. A vet tech called the next day to check in and when we asked why the deworming was administered a second time, the response we received was "I don’t know, I wasn’t there" and skirted around it. Dr. Blackwood then called to follow up and we asked her the same thing and she said: "I’m not sure but I’ll look into it". We never heard back, no apology, no accountability.
UPDATE: Dr. Kevin Shuler reached out to me personally and apologized for the error and informed me that they take matters like this very seriously. They closed one of their clinics following the incident and re-educated 12 staff members regarding safe practices and proper communication. After reviewing the steps that were took, in hindsight he did admit it may have been excessive to recommend the emergency vet. They have had this situation previously take a turn for the worse so I can see where they were trying to be "better safe than sorry". Overall, I appreciate Dr. Shuler’s quick response and applaud the steps that were taken to prevent this from happening in the future.
Last month I was in town visiting from Boston when I noticed that my pup had something up with his eye, not only were they able to squeeze me in that day (!) but the entire staff was SO incredibly friendly, kind, and helpful. If I lived in the area this would absolutely be my Vet 🙂
I couldn’t recommend a better vet than Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital. As soon as I sat down in their lobby, Alex from reception placed a Feliway sprayed blanket over my cats (Skye) carrier for extra comfort and security — I loved that. The staff was so welcoming from the moment I walked in, and my nurse was so gentle and thoughtful with Skye. Dr. Blackwood was incredible to talk with. She was very reassuring, kind, and informative. The patient-centered care was unlike any vet experience I’ve had in Mount Pleasant over the last 7-years! Kindness really does go a long way.
This company’s customer service is disgraceful. They can’t tell you the time of day without correcting themselves. Their entire MO is based on profits. They’ll sell you puppy daycare slots on the moon if they think you’ll pay for them. They booted me for "unprofessional behaviour’; meaning they didn’t like a pushy and direct customer calling them out.
Absolutely scandalous behaviours!
