I brought my dog with Addison’s disease in after two days of illness. She was very dehydrated and needed medical intervention sooner than my vet was available. I’ve taken her to AVC in the past for similar support. I expected this visit to be like previous visits, where they would give meds to stop the vomiting, rehydrate her, and send us home. Instead, they pushed for hospitalization. They ran blood tests that indicated she was very dehydrated and they suspected acute pancreatitis. The vet talked to me at great length and detail about my dog’s Addison’s history, her medications, etc. She expressed that she was impressed at how well managed the Addison’s was in my dog. We talked briefly about her treatment plan, including an ultrasound to confirm her diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. I asked if it was necessary, as she had an elevated amylase on her blood test. The vet told me that "there aren’t really any good blood tests to diagnose acute pancreatitis." I’m a lab scientist and know this to be untrue. Amylase and Lipase are the gold standard for diagnosing and monitoring pancreatic diseases. She also mentioned that the kidney results indicated azotemia. I asked what the treatment protocol was for azotemia and acute pancreatitis. They were nearly identical: hydration, antibiotics, steroids, and time. I know from experience that treatment for an Addisonian dog in crisis is hydration, steroids, and meds for vomiting. The vet indicated that acute pancreatitis has a duration of 2-3 days. Cricket had symptoms for 48 hours at this point. So, it was quite shocking to see a detailed treatment plan of a minimum of 2 days – preferably 3 days – with more diagnostic tests, for a total of $5,000-$8,000! The care manager is the one who went over the treatment plan with me and as I questioned many of the items she became more and more defensive. It was well past midnight at this point, and I’d been there more than 2 hours. I asked if they could give her a bolus of saline and support meds and was told that they "don’t do that here." I said that I’d be willing to have her held for 24 hours with the treatment meds only – no more diagnostics. The case manager got angry and yelled "Your dog is in Addison’s crisis and will die!" My dog has had Addison’s for 9 years. In that time, we’ve had 3 crisis events. I know what they look like. I know what they mean. Less than 10 minutes before, the vet indicated to me that Cricket’s Addison’s was well maintained. This was a really low blow. When I said that the vet did not say that to me, she said "the vet said that she was in crisis." I restated that I only wanted a 24 hour stay with supportive treatment and no diagnostics. She left to recalculate the care plan. It was still very pricey. A different doctor called the next day saying repeat kidney blood tests showed that her azotemia was resolved. None of her lab results indicated Addison’s crisis. They strongly discouraged me from removing her from their care after 24 hrs because she was still refusing food. I took her home and she was eating soft foods within hours. The next day, she ate boiled chicken without a problem. By day 3, she was back to her normal self.
AVC diagnosed Cricket with Addison’s when she was six months old. They saved her life. We’ve taken her back for one of her crisis events because our vet office was closed. For that event, they hydrated her with a bolus of saline and gave her steroid and anti-nausea shots, then we took her home. I’ve always looked to them for competent care when our vet wasn’t available to help. This will be our last visit to AVC. I’ve already found a replacement facility for future events, should we need them. Not only did they try to pad the bill and over-diagnose and treat my dog, but their doctors showed incompetence on multiple occasions. I also felt pressured to agree to things that were not necessary, and emotional blackmail was used when I refused to go along.

I went in hoping, praying for the best outcome and got the worst news possible. However, the staff was kind, the vet was so knowledgeable and considerate with my questions, I never felt stupid asking any question. They gave me multiple estimates for treatments listing the lowest up to the absolute most. I cannot speak highly enough of this care team and the experience, all though very devastating, I felt like every human and animal that walked through the doors was cared about. Thank you for taking care of my sweet Sammy and helping me make his last few days on this earth good ones. If I ever need emergency care or specialized care I will choose AVC. I hope, however, I do not need your services but it is a relief to know such a caring, knowledgeable, and specialized clinic exists.

It’s taken me a year to decide to write this. Dr. Kuhlman almost killed my dog. Gave her this med that made her shake, then when i called, him and his assistant both were on the defensive when i was just trying to sort out what’s going on. The rest of AVC is great, but i highly recommend staying away from this doctor. After almost $6000 just to him and his shot and the dark medicine practice, my dog was still not ok, he even wanted me to take time off to go to Colorado so she could be studied. I am getting better help though from someone more competent. But i will never use him again. Again, AVC itself is fantastic, the ER care is great, but internal medicine, specifically kuhlman, i will never ever use again. I hope after writing this they do not try to retaliate, or call me. But to simplify my review, this man only cared to bankrupt me and kill my dog, my best friend, in the process.
Take this as you will, follow your gut for pet care, but please, stay away from this mans pet care as much as you can.
